A big part of struggling with mental health is having trouble with motivation. This is especially true when it comes to depression. Many people have trouble wanting to do anything, including things they used to enjoy.
Sometimes finding motivation can come from self-reflection. To do this, you need to be really good at realizing what keeps you stuck, and be willing and able to make the necessary changes to help yourself get started on reaching your goals.
Other times, motivation comes after action. Sometimes the what we need to do is just make ourselves get up and get started. Oftentimes, getting started is the hardest part, but then things get easier after that. Once you’ve started, it’s much easier to keep going.
I know that this is the case for me, and it’s with everything. It honestly doesn’t matter what it is, I’ve always been like that.
For me, nothing helped until I realized that my motivation came from hating where I was and feeling stuck there. The only way to change that was if I did something about it. While my anxiety and fear were telling me not to try, I realized that I needed to. The worst that could happen was that it didn’t work out and I’d still be where I was.
Although I was afraid the repeated disappointment would eventually kill me, I knew that staying where I was could realistically do the same.
The Only Way Out Is Up
As I said before, while the worst that could happen was that I stayed in the same place, I could at least be proud that I was trying. Eventually, something would work. I didn’t have a choice for it not to, which is a really big part of what kept me going. Just trying different things, over and over and over again.
I needed to find what worked for me, and hopefully, insteading of dwelling at rock bottom, I’d be on my way up and into a much better space. And do you want to know what the best part is?
Absolutely no one can take that away from me.
Those accomplishments were mine and mine alone, that is one of the best feelings. Knowing that no one else is capable of doing that kind of work for you, and looking back to see that you did it all yourself, is so validating. And do you know what else? That makes you a pretty amazing person, too.
You’re Worth The Effort
As my therapist always says, resilience isn’t how fast you bounce back, but persevering no matter what. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get to where you want to go, it only matters that you keep going. Even when you make mistakes or fall off track, you just have to pick yourself back up and start again.
Always keep going! Always try! You deserve it.
And honestly, no matter where you are, even if it is rock bottom, you are incredible for still being here. Showing up and being you, even when it feels like you can’t anymore, is the first sign of your own strength. Remember that you’re worth the effort! And if nothing else, let that be your motivation.
